Government’s Solar Roadmap Signals Major Growth for Renewables in Kent

Published: July 2025
By SGS Energy

The UK Government has just released its long-awaited Solar Roadmap, outlining plans to massively expand the country’s solar power capacity by 2030—and the impact for Kent could be huge.

The Roadmap sets a national target of 45–47 GW of solar by the end of the decade, nearly tripling the current capacity. With the right support, this could rise to over 57 GW, enough to power around 9 million homes with clean, low-cost electricity.

What It Means for Kent

At SGS Energy, we see this as a major moment for the South East. Kent is already home to a growing number of domestic and commercial solar systems—but this solar roadmap paves the way for a much faster rollout, backed by national policy, planning reform, and grid investment.

Some of the key changes that could boost solar adoption across Kent include:

  • Solar as standard on new homes: From 2025, developers will be expected to include solar panels on new residential builds. For homeowners and housing associations in Kent, this could create a local boom in solar-ready properties.
  • Easier commercial rooftop installations: A change to grid rules means systems up to 5 MW can now be connected without triggering major network reviews. That’s great news for businesses, warehouses, and agricultural sites across Kent looking to cut energy costs and carbon.
  • More funding for public buildings: The government has pledged £200 million for solar on schools and hospitals. With dozens of public-sector buildings in Kent, this funding could unlock large-scale rooftop projects in our own communities.
  • Workforce opportunities: Delivering this vision will require thousands of skilled workers. As a Kent-based installer, SGS Energy welcomes the roadmap’s commitment to investing in training and careers, especially in underserved areas.
  • Support for ethical, UK-based supply chains: The roadmap highlights the importance of traceable, sustainable solar components. At SGS Energy, we’ve already made moves toward ethical sourcing, and we’re ready to lead on local supply chain partnerships.

How the Solar Roadmap is A Turning Point for Renewables in the Region

For years, solar has been one of the most cost-effective and scalable renewable technologies, but often limited by outdated planning rules, grid connection delays, and underinvestment. This roadmap acknowledges those challenges—and more importantly, sets out ways to fix them.

By removing some of the red tape and actively promoting solar as a key part of the UK’s clean energy future, the government is opening the door for Kent to become a regional leader in renewables.

From Medway to Maidstone, Ashford to the Kent coast, we believe local businesses, homeowners, and councils now have a golden opportunity to rethink how they power their properties.

How SGS Energy Is Responding

At SGS Energy, we’re already scaling up to meet this moment. Whether it’s helping homeowners reduce bills, supporting large-scale commercial installs, or advising local authorities on solar-ready planning, we’re ready.

We’ll be working closely with developers, schools, businesses, and public bodies across Kent to make sure they can benefit from the roadmap’s changes, without delay.
